Sakor, a cherished elephant at the Phnom Tamao Wildlife Rescue Center, has died after a short illness. Veterinary staff worked hard to save him, but he was unable to overcome severe abdominal swelling and passed away on September 22.

The 34-year-old male elephant originally came from Botum Sakor National Park in Koh Kong province. He was brought to the rescue center in 2012 following conflict with local farmers. According to the center, the relocation was intended to protect both nearby residents and travellers.

Over the years, Sakor became a treasured and important member of the center's resident elephant herd.

Staff and management at the facility voiced their deep sorrow at his passing and offered thanks to the veterinarians, keepers and everyone else who had cared for Sakor and looked after his wellbeing right up to the end.

The Airavata Elephant Foundation also shared its grief over his death. The organisation noted that Sakor's name was drawn from Botum Sakor National Park, with "Sakor" meaning "sea" in Khmer.

After being moved to the center, Sakor settled into a safe and peaceful life. He formed a particularly close bond with a female elephant named Chamroeun.

The foundation reflected that Sakor's story highlights the ongoing difficulties of humans and wildlife living side by side in Cambodia.

An autopsy is planned to establish the exact cause of his death.
