The United Kingdom and Cambodia have launched a renewed effort to tackle transnational online scam networks, vowing coordinated steps to dismantle criminal operations, safeguard victims, and put an end to human trafficking used to fuel fraud schemes.

UK Home Office Minister of State Lord Hanson is currently in Cambodia attending the three-day International Conference on Combating Online Scams, running from September 22 to 24. According to the British Embassy in Phnom Penh, his visit underscores the growing threat posed by criminal groups operating across Southeast Asia, who increasingly exploit people trafficked into forced scam operations while targeting victims globally—including in the UK.

Critics have long warned that these networks combine multiple forms of organized crime, including deceptive recruitment through fake job ads, followed by confinement and coercion. Officials from both countries agree that the scale of the problem demands international collaboration.

Lord Hanson praised Cambodia for taking the lead in convening the conference and expressed optimism that joint efforts would yield tangible results in the near term. He thanked the Cambodian government for facilitating the gathering and emphasized the importance of sustained partnership.

The initiative aligns with the UK’s broader strategy of working through international frameworks like INTERPOL’s Global Fraud Taskforce, which unites law enforcement agencies across borders to counter increasingly complex fraud operations.

At the conference, participants are expected to translate commitments into concrete measures, including improved protections for individuals harmed by scam enterprises.
